2016 No. 2016
I finally managed to chain a shiny Beldum yesterday, through my sheer dumb luck as usual. I've been unlucky enough to have only gotten two swarms of Beldum the entire time I've been playing. The first time I tried, I managed to get a chain of forty going, but it broke for no reason, with no shinies. The last Beldum I caught became my currently used Metagross though. Anyway, I managed to get to a chain of seven yesterday, and the eighth patch was a shiny one that yielded an Adamant shiny Beldum. My very first chained shiny pokemon.

My very first shiny just so happened to be my very first pokemon as it was. My Squirtle from Blue. Just to think that they didn't technically exist until G/S/C came out.

So that leaves only one more, as I've encountered three naturally, though they all have something about them that may nullify their validity, Beldum being chained, Squirtle being from before they existed, and a Caterpie that was encountered randomly on a ROM.

At the time, I had no way of actually getting it onto my copy of Ruby or my copy of Diamond, so I didn't think much of it besides the blind rage I felt at the time.

Anyway, Shiny thread. Discuss your favorites, your catches, your stories, whatever.

A legit shiny Zubat. I already had a EV trained Crobat though. I eventually gave up trying to chain a shiny Dunsparce, restarted my platinum save file, and pokesav'd a Shinesparce as my starter. I beat a single gym and it just felt so wrong, I changed it to a regular Dunsparce.

On Christmas day, the recent one, I found a shiny Marowak in Victory Road while training for the E4. I was lucky to have someone with sleep powder and about thirty ultra balls, although I got her on the first throw. Only legit shiny I've ever seen, not including the Red Gyarados of course. It was 42, so it already missed out on a lot of training and doesn't have great stats or anything, but I still use it. With a Thick Club, that thing's a beast.

Question about shinies: For any of the kind that sit there in the open like Lapras, Snorlax, the legendaries; is their non-shinyness set in stone from the start of the game, or does it reset everything you battle them? For example, could someone save by Mewtwo and battle him, reset the gameboy, and repeat or would it always be what it is? I'm only asking in case I run into one like that and it IS shiny so I know whether or not I have to worry about catching it THAT TIME.

I've heard things both ways: works, and doesn't work.
But this thread is convincing:

People say they've soft resetted for event pokes - I call Snorlax/Palkia/etc event pokemon.

Whoah awesome - congratulations!

Shininess is determined when its stats are generated, which is when it is first encountered in battle. For roaming legends, this means when you first see them, for everything else it's when you enter battle.

To answer your question directly: yes, you only get one shot at it. If you reset, chances are the RNG will come up with a different PID/IV combo which will mean it's not shiny anymore.

What I'm more curious about however is in HGSS: if the overworld sprites now have shiny forms, does that mean that stationary legends will have their PID/IV determined beforehand to know which overworld sprite to use? If so, when is this done, and does it kill soft-resetting for stats and shinies?

I've captured 4 shinys myself. A Dustox, Bellossom, Raticate and Noctowl in that order, and each on a difforent GBA/DS game. I've also got a whole ton of other shinys, but I got them by cheating divices.

people who say it doesn't work are impatient niggers. I had a friend who soft reset for all three shiny legendary golems.

that...seems very unlikely.
1/8192 probability of encountering a single shiny. and thats per pokemon. unless it took em a year, I dont believe you.

I caught a shiny swinub in Crystal. It looked like a blue watermelon from the back and I loved it so much even though I hated swinub. I caught it while in the grocery store with my mom in the produce section and I screamed and she yelled at me but it's fine because I caught it <3

Then I reset my game.

Now I have a shiny Alakazam named Sparklez that I kinda brag about. But what I want most is a shiny Luxray.

ive seen 3 shinies throughout the years, and all of them were in the safari zone and all of them ran away after one turn

Got a shiny Loudred in Sapphire, and a Shuppet in Emerald. Wish I had a shiny Metagross though.

I haven't encountered a single shiny since the day I caught a Shiny Rattata at Route 22, who then evolved into Shiny Raticate, and caught a Shiny Venonat at either Route 15 or Safari Zone in 2005/2006.

My only legit shiny (not an event or hacked) is a shiny zigzagoon I found in ruby when walking around one day. Damn near shit myself. He's sitting in my platinum game to this day. Sadly his IVs and nature suck but still.

My first legit shiny:

The back-story is this: When I had Silver I cheated on it a lot using Gameshark and BrainBoy. Never anythign substantial like 'instant win, level 99 pokes, etc', usually just for collecting the ones i didn't have so i didn't have to trade.

Anyway, I started fresh for kicks and giggles to start with every base stage pokemon, either on Silver or Crystal (I don't recall which.) After putzing around in Route 29 using the GS to catch all base stage pokemon, with them being shiny, I started my adventure. Before I stepped in Cherrygrove I saved, shut GBC (it was teal) off, and returned to my save. I stepped into Cherrygrove. Follow old man, get map card, blah blah blah, and left north. I stepped into the grass and there it was. An ever-loving-mother-fucking shiny pidgey...

...But this couldn't be right!
I saved and took the GS out! How is there a shiny pokemon there? Must have fucked something up somewhere. Soft Reset. New Game. Save.

YEARS later, I realize what a tard I was as a teen. And that is my story of my first legit shiny.

...Those accursed Shiny Pidgeys...

Pic unrelated, it's math.

Found a shiny Oddish when breeding in Sapphire, accidentally went into the grass below and found it, cool. It's still in my Diamond PC box, I think.

My brother found a Shiny Paras on his Fire Red while playing on the Game Boy Player in my room.....in the safari zone. Threw a Poke Ball and caught that bitch though. Also in my Diamond's PC box.

And a couple years ago I found a shiny Zubat in Sapphire, but traded it for a normal Chikorita because I didn't really care about the Zubat line.
>> No. 2073
My first was a shiny Pidgey encountered in Platinum in the Safari Zone and my second was the shiny Beldum that I hatched. Other than that, my other shinies were traded to me. A few of those are possibly (hopefully not) illegitimate. I'm not known for being informed on the legitimacy of all of my shinies so hell if I know.. :(

I chained for a Shiny Mareep to see what's the big deal on chaining. I didn't like it, had no patience, so I just left.

And when I was EV training, I encountered an Onix and asked myself "Why is that Onix piss-colored? HOLY SHIT! It's a shiny Onix!" and caught it instantly.

My luck is all the same with these, I'll find none for years then find 2 at once. Happened with hats in TF2, it'll happen with shinies.

I just know it.

OH MY GOD
I just realized something that would suck.
What if while you were with a partner in D/P/Pt you came across two shinys but you couldn't catch them because of that whole partner thing.
>> No. 2080
>>5537
Easier to deal with. Kill off your partner, choose which shiny you want and kill the other. Then retell the story of getting two shinies at once because the odds are astounding.

Exact same thing happened to my friend as he was teamed up with Buck. He didn't realize he could kill his Claydol, so Buck ended up taking out the shiny Magcargo. He'll be pissed for the rest of his life.

Shiny Marowak Pokéfag here, again. I found a shiny Charmander on the LeafGreen I'm borrowing from my girlfriend who is borrowing from her best friend. My girlfriend doesn't have any way to hack so neither of us know how it got there, but FUCK YEAH [Seaking] BLACK CHARIZARD

First and only shiny I've ever found/caught was a shiny zigzagoon. I had just restarted my Sapphire version, and randomly ran into a shiny in the patch of grass behind the Pretty Petal Shop. (Is that the name of it?)

Finally EV trained my shiny Charmander. Now he's all black. Named his Sev Rege. 8] [Sev means black in some language, Rege means King in a different language]

Just beat Red. Soft-resetting for a Shiny Squirtle at Oak's lab. Has anyone here tried this yet?

I have never seen a shiny in any of my pokemon games before TT_TT I have played red, yellow, fire red, ruby, sapphire, pearl, and heartgold all the way through, and I have never seen a single one. Haha, but I do have a funny story. One of my friends encountered a shiny graveler, and the first thing it did... was selfdestruct... Bahahaha! XD

I recently found a Shiny Gentle Golbat(M) last month.

Otherwise, my first shiny was a Brave Finneon(F) in Pearl.

From then till now, I've found a Timid Geodude(M), a Jolly Onix(M), a Gloom(M, pissed about this a lot), can't remember its nature, a Bidoof, same as the Gloom(F), a Brave Staravia(F), a Quirky West Shellos(M) and a Careful East Shellos(F).

I'm trying to chain Budew in Pearl, but fucking Misdreavus kept interrupting.

The only two shinies I have are a level 30 Gyarados in SoulSilver (Red Gyarados) and a female shiny Blaziken in Platinum.

Let's see... In all my time playing I've naturally encountered 4 shiny pokes and caught 3 of said pokes. First encounter was a Tangela back in Gen 2 on gold. Second encounter wasn't until my second play through pearl, a shiny Shinx. Third encounter was in Heart Gold, first wild pokemon that attacked after surfing in Vermilion Harbor right after exiting the SS Aqua. The fourth encounter happened after I started up a game on Emerald, while grinding a Poochyena I ran into a shiny Wurmple. So far that's been all.
