Yesterday I listened to a few things and this hit me like a bag of bricks. It's obvious once you hear it, but damn if it wasn't a surprise to me. Thrown together with FL Studio in a matter of perhaps 30 minutes.

Yep, now listen to the music box house from Majora's Mask (the one in Ikana Valley)...

Oh, and then throw this (>>3797) into the mix and then realize that this means Kondo employed at least a few musical elements from Strauss as early as SMB1 (SMB3 Athletic was noticeably similar to SMB1 Underwater). Now listen to the Battle Theme from SMB 3 and the Dr Mario theme.

Blue Danube isn't really known as a carnival waltz except for it's (satirical) choral arrangement. A piece that is more known for that might be "Across the Ocean" which you can hear quite clearly in this version of the music box house, along with a hint of the flower waltz from the nutcracker suite.
