Nintendo might currently be buying new CPUs for a future handheld.

Our core handheld adventures have always been in a 2D world. But with the next handheld, it's likely we'll see GameCube graphics.
With the DS, Game Freak cleverly integrated 3D into looking 2D, and they maintained the 2D feel and gameplay of all previous games. Game Freak has emphasized that they want to keep Pokémon 2D.

With the pressure of 3D GameCube-ness, will Game Freak finally bend and create the 3D adventure we've dreamed of? It would open so many more possibilities, and we'd no longer be limited to a 2D overhead experience. Right now I'm envisioning a switching between overheard and free-roaming modes, kind of like how Metroid: Other M seems to switch up controls.

For example, I walk from Pallet to Viridian in a 3D world. It would be a 3rd person view - which means, you see Red walking around in front of the camera. Items on the ground would only be visible by walking next to them and seeing them (encouraging exploration). It would feel much more familiar and natural to walk forward and have trees blocking your sight, rather than seeing exactly what comes next via an overhead view.
Same 3D free-roaming when I got to Viridian.

I was thinking that puzzle-like areas could be overhead-view only, but thinking on it further... I think that the entire game could be enjoyed from only a 3rd person perspective. the tiles in Silph Co. would be much more challenging... so maybe Game Corner/Silph Co/certain gyms/etc should stay overhead?

Not only these ideas, but add day/night and dates to the game? It's a really exciting prospect. Certain NPCs being in town only on certain days. Planting a berry and coming back later to water it and watch it grow.

While I would be very happy to see innovation within the 2D-only realm, we must include the possibility of 3D in our speculation.

I think there's a better thread for this idea somewhere, but not sure where it is.
In Gen V/VI, there should be a place you can only fly to.

I didn't want to start a new thread, so, my idea for Gen VI: It'd be sweet if the in-game weather changed all the time, and we actually got forecasts on TV for it.

Everyone knows the obvious. You start out with your first Pokemon. You battle wild Pokemon and others alike. You reach the Elite 4 and claim championship. You are the trainer...

...But what about the people you meet on the way? As is evidenced in game, not everyone is a trainer. Many of them choose a less active (and AWESOME) lifestyle.
This thread is to discuss everything and anything to do with OTHER jobs in the pokemon world. Nurses, Policemen, Professors, Electricians, Breeders, Gym Leaders, Shop Owners, News Reporter, Camera Man, on and on and on. We've seen them all.
What do they DO at work? Why do you think they'd choose it? How does it relate to the IRL equivalent? Pay grade and salary? Perspective other jobs? Necessity?
Basically, let's explore the world of Pokemon that may likely be most related to ours.

This thread is for speculation and known fact, as long as it has to do with lesser occupations in the Pokemon world.

Pic unrelated, couldn't find anything to do with Pokemon jobs.

Kids start playing baseball at an even younger age, and some of them go on to play in the Major Leagues. The same thing applies here, but they'd probably just settle down and become a Gym Leader or something.
>> No. 434
Well I'd assume that there would be a large number of trainers who set out on there journy, challenged a gym leader, lets say Brock, and lost their first battle, then went off and trained their Pokemon, then lost the next battle, and just kept losing until they said "Ahhh Fuck It! I'm gonna become a builder/pluber/whatever and you bastards (looking at their Pkemon) can help me you useless things!"

Also there are probably people who relise that if everyone else is off training Pokemon there is no one to do real jobs, and hence think they could make a fortune.

We know the Pokemon series has practically grabbed almost every animal, mythological creatures and some objects, make them look fancy, vicious or retarded and call it a Pokemon.

So what do you want to see as a Pokemon? Me, I would like to see a Vampire squid or something similar.

(I don't know if this belongs in /beedrill/ or /dex/, but I'd give /dex/ a shot)

For one, I'd like to see a better spider pokemon. There's like four or five pokemon based on the BAGWORM, but only one (unfortunately shitty) spider pokemon. A poison centipede would be cool too.

There's a few well-known and common animals that don't really have pokemon equivalents. For example, there are a couple dog pokemon and a hyena pokemon, but no obvious wolf pokemon. Chipmunks don't seem to be represented. Dolphins. Barnacles could make a good pokemon, maybe. Did they have a zebra? I don't think so... Maybe like an ice zebra as a counterpart to rapidash's fire horse?

A pokemon based on living garbage like the jewish garbage pile lady in Fraggle Rock.

Most importantly, though, an ELECTRIC EEL POKEMON, PEOPLE. I MEAN COME ON! I know they've already got Lanturn as a water/electric, but an electric eel is an arguably better implementation of the concept, and anyway, there's no reason you can't have two.

Let's brainstorm ideas for Gen V's title pair. You know, like Red/Blue and Diamond/Pearl. Also come up with the third, if you're feeling ambitious.
I was thinking I might make this a sort of contest, too. If a person guesses both titles correctly, I could buy their choice of HG or SS when it comes out in the US. Possibly.

For the record, the line mentioned in this story is actually:

[ Floor 2 ]
Blue :{S} Hey, RED! What brings you here? Your POKéMON don't look dead!
I can at least make them faint! Let's go, pal!

*battle goes here*

{E} What? You stinker! I took it easy on you too!

How's your POKéDEX coming, pal? I just caught a CUBONE! I can't
find the grown-up MAROWAK yet! I doubt there are any left!
Well, I better get going! I've got a lot to accomplish, pal!
Smell ya later!

I don't think so. The Shellos was what tipped me off. In DPPt, they have those certain forms because of where they live -- west of Mt. Cotoronet or east. So what's with this third one? Since the form of the Shellos depends on which side of the mountain it lives on, this third one is just entirely out of place.

The new Regis don't make much sense to me, either. Regigigas being the keeper of Registeel, ice and rock was one thing but this just seems... eh.

And Floby's far too close to Castform for comfort.

Notice Steelix's type change?

It could just be me, too, but the shading seems off.

Finally, well, there's this. http://watertrainer.deviantart.com/art/Fakemon-List-146730886 (though looking through the rest of his gallery, I have my doubts that he's the original artist... :/)Not all the sprites are the same but many the ones that aren't are strikingly similar.

Pic unrelated, don't have one that fits.

So, most people here probably have at least heard of the question: What Pokemon was Cubone? Generally there are three sides, people who think it a Kanghaskhan, those who fancy it a lost Charmander, and the unimaginative. I personally believe it is a Charmander.

In R/B/G, Charmander had spines on the backsprite. So does Cubone, but less so. The skull the Cubone wears is not dissimilar to a Charizard's head. The coloring is quite similar as well. The general body shape, too, is alike. It may have started as a pre-pokemon story, now forgotten by game designers, perhaps? If so, it's plot would likely go along like this:

A Charizard is killed and gutted by hunters. Before its skull is taken as a trophy, it is swiped by the child of the Charizard, as to not forget its mother, a reminder to be careful, and a symbol of hope to avenge the mother. The Charmander finds it weighty, too much to hold, and so wears it as a helmet. Later, it finds its way to Pokemon Tower, hoping to pray for its mother's well being in the afterlife, and its own. The hunters(maybe they became Team Rocket in the games?) follow it, hoping to get money from selling it. As the Charmander enters, he/she is assaulted by the hunters. The spirit of its mother appears to stop the hunters, choosing a form similar to its child, but the skull is notably its face, it has no skin. It defeats the hunters, and thus, through differences later in design, and story, and because it was featured in an in-game story arc people would want to catch them, becomes the Cubone and Marowak we know today.

So... any opinions?

That's crap. I've myself seen the data structure in RBY and it's just dumb luck that the index numbers happens to align such that mis€™sing҉̵̞̟̠̖̗̘̙ ҉̵̞̟̠̖̗̘̙ ҉̵̞̟̠̖̗̘̙҉̵̞ evolves like that. Clever, but completely wrong.

The mother of all Cubones is a being with many heads. Each head has a separate reproductive system, and only gives birth once. Each child Cubone only sees its mother head and ignores all others. Each head dies shortly after the Cubone becomes able to live on its own. Each Cubone then takes the skull of its mother head and one of its bones to use as its weapon and armor. New heads are grown by the mother of Cubones to replace the ones that die, the process repeats. This is just some random bullshit I made up on the spot, but it and your Charmander theory are at least better than that retarded Kangaskhan one.

Also, another bullshit theory I came with a while back: substitutes are related to Cubones. Shiny Cubones are the same color as Substitutes.

The truth, however, is probably that it's a video game and we're reading too much into it, breeding fucked a lot of shit up, and before you say HURR THEY PUT A LOT OF THOUGHT INTO THIS THEY MUST HAVE IT FIGURED OUT, it's a video game aimed at ten-year-olds, and ten-year-olds don't care about realism or not leaving things unanswered. Remember, they decided to try to fit a breeding system into a Game Boy game and that ended up with some bullshit where everthing comes from eggs. Plus it's Nintendo, for whom gameplay comes first, storyline, etc. come either second or never. See: the Legend of Zelda timeline.

Of course, it's also possible that they were going to make something realistic up, but then they decided it was funnier to watch fans like up pointlessly debate over this.

This is rumored to be the prototype for the Gen V girl. It's from an updated version of the A Man Who Created Pokemon artbook. It mentions a boy being next to her but I don't have a picture of him. It doesn't say anywhere that she's the Gen V girl, but they do look similar based on her sprite.

If a Ground-, Rock-, or Fire-type Pokémon cries, do the tears inflict damage? Maybe Sadness could be another status ailment akin to Attraction. Sadness would cause damage to everyone, but it'd cause extra damage for Ground, Rock, and Fire-types.
