Nintendo might currently be buying new CPUs for a future handheld.

Our core handheld adventures have always been in a 2D world. But with the next handheld, it's likely we'll see GameCube graphics.
With the DS, Game Freak cleverly integrated 3D into looking 2D, and they maintained the 2D feel and gameplay of all previous games. Game Freak has emphasized that they want to keep Pokémon 2D.

With the pressure of 3D GameCube-ness, will Game Freak finally bend and create the 3D adventure we've dreamed of? It would open so many more possibilities, and we'd no longer be limited to a 2D overhead experience. Right now I'm envisioning a switching between overheard and free-roaming modes, kind of like how Metroid: Other M seems to switch up controls.

For example, I walk from Pallet to Viridian in a 3D world. It would be a 3rd person view - which means, you see Red walking around in front of the camera. Items on the ground would only be visible by walking next to them and seeing them (encouraging exploration). It would feel much more familiar and natural to walk forward and have trees blocking your sight, rather than seeing exactly what comes next via an overhead view.
Same 3D free-roaming when I got to Viridian.

I was thinking that puzzle-like areas could be overhead-view only, but thinking on it further... I think that the entire game could be enjoyed from only a 3rd person perspective. the tiles in Silph Co. would be much more challenging... so maybe Game Corner/Silph Co/certain gyms/etc should stay overhead?

Not only these ideas, but add day/night and dates to the game? It's a really exciting prospect. Certain NPCs being in town only on certain days. Planting a berry and coming back later to water it and watch it grow.

While I would be very happy to see innovation within the 2D-only realm, we must include the possibility of 3D in our speculation.

Needs moar screens.

Would be a cool design, but I'm pretty sure that fan-made 'concept art' of a DS2 has been around the internet since about '05 I want to say. I certainly remember seeing it a year or so ago at least.

-_-
Guys, it's just a picture. I am not claiming this is the next handheld. The subject at hand is what is to be discussed.

Can't find the picture of the [fan made] DS concept art which has a ridiculous amount of screens.

No, I understand that.

Also, there is talk that nVidia has been contacted to make the hardware for the successor to the DS, and the chip that has supposedly been chosen has graphics on par with the Wii while using less energy than the DSi's current configuration.

Mm hmm - that's where this speculation started, with that news.

And, Oh man, I just realised that the new CPUs could be for WII HD. Gosh I can't believe I didn't think of that.

DS2 in the hands of Pokemon Company
http://computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=235077

I don't think I/we said it in this thread, but Nona and I have said that Nintendo consults Game Freak (among other developers, apparently) when making a new handheld, to help influence the design of the next handheld. Partly to maximize Pokémon games' success.

Well, I just learned that HG/SS have the ability to register two items. Watching gameplay of HG/SS, and the announcer pointing out the new things like the Pokémon following you. Also, the touch-screen controls have finally been perfected to how they should have been (unless you can't tap where you want to Fly).
These new things are pushing Pokémon in a great direction. If they include time/day events in Gen V/VI, that'd be fantastic.

Being able to see your Pokémon though... that's a big deal. It leads me to speculate that a future game will allow you to see them in more detail, possibly have overworld sprites/polygons replacing random encounters. 3D game? It might not be free roam, but having your player character sprite be 3D, along with your following monster, seems like the direction they're going.
It's so exciting to think about the possibilities =]

I think there's a better thread for this idea somewhere, but not sure where it is.
In Gen V/VI, there should be a place you can only fly to.

I didn't want to start a new thread, so, my idea for Gen VI: It'd be sweet if the in-game weather changed all the time, and we actually got forecasts on TV for it.

I'll start a new thread some time. But for now:
It'd be awesome of B/W's third game had a cliffhanger, and had a sequel on 3DS.

Maybe somehow import our B/W/Greynbow team to it kinda like Golden Sun to Lost Age.
