As we all remember from season 1, Gary meets up with Ash and shows him 10 badges and he was going for his 11th one. It fore mentioned that only 8 badges were required to qualify for the league.

Now keep in mind that there are in fact unofficial gyms like AJ's.
The game came out before the series and there were only 8 badges but more than 8 cities (ex. lavender town)
It is possible to skip gyms in Kanto and still get into the league

What happened to the cities where these other gyms are? What kind of gyms are they (water, psych, fire)?

...more

I noticed that Gary has 7 badges that are not part of the normal 8 gym rotation, so in all that makes 15 gyms in Kanto. Gary has gone and went on a totally different journey than Ash all together, in the games your rival usually hits every gym before you.

This is a super awesome thread and I think it has a lot of potential. I want to document/screenshot all the other unique badge instances and discuss them all. For now, let's add this.
From 073 - Bad to the Bone - random trainer. I think we can assume these are from more unique gyms from Kanto.

AJ's gym is unofficial, so it doesn't have a badge and isn't part of the league. However, these badges trainers have throughout the anime indicate that there are other official gyms throughout Kanto. A trainer requires only 8 minimum of them to enter the League.

I thought this was really interesting. Different paths yielding different gyms and therefore different badges.

I don't know where all these other gyms came from or if the trainers are taking badges from other regions (ex. Jhoto, Orange Islands, etc...) and mixing them with the Kanto badges. If this were true then it wouldn't matter where you came from and the league is not interested in where you get your qualifications from but if you meet the 8 badge mark.

We need a side-story of Gary's pokemon journey

Well the ones so far are headed for the Kanto league, so that implies they earned Kanto badges.

I'd totally watch more side stories like Chronicles and Raikou: Legend of Thunder, I don't see why it doesn't happen more often. It'd be awesome if they always made one main-character movie for each gen's new player character. Actually I think Platinum would make a really great movie.

Here are the badges from the Dengeki Pikachu manga. They're just another interpretation of the Kanto badges, but it's still interesting to see all the different badges.
